our story

Setting the Barre opened its doors in Tavistock in September 2022 with one vision: to create a dance school where every child feels welcome, supported and inspired.

Dance has been part of my life since I was four years old, and it's something I've always loved. From local shows and ISTD exams to training professionally in Musical Theatre at Bodywork Company in Cambridge, dance has taken me on an incredible journey. I gained my ISTD teaching qualifications in Imperial Classical Ballet, Modern Theatre and Tap.

Over the last 10 years, I've had the privilege of teaching dancers across Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and Asia. Those experiences have shaped the teacher I am today and inspired me to create the kind of school I always wanted to teach in.

At Setting the Barre, I want every child to feel they belong, whether they're taking their very first class or working towards exams and performances. Watching our dancers grow in confidence, develop new skills and enjoy coming to class each week is the best part of my job.

In January 2025, we reached a huge milestone by opening our very own Crelake Studio.  Having our own space has allowed us to continue growing our dance family in a welcoming, professional environment designed especially for our students.

The safety and wellbeing of our dancers will always come first. We're fully insured, DBS checked, First Aid trained and committed to maintaining the highest safeguarding standards, so you can feel confident your child is learning in a safe, caring environment.

Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about us. We can't wait to welcome you to the Setting the Barre family.

Our Mission

At Setting the Barre, we believe dance is about so much more than learning steps.

Our aim is to create a positive, welcoming environment where every child feels valued, supported and encouraged to be themselves. We celebrate every achievement, whether it's mastering a new step, building confidence, making a new friend or performing on stage for the very first time.

We believe every dancer deserves to feel included, challenged and proud of what they achieve, regardless of their age, ability or experience. Through high-quality ISTD training, creativity and plenty of encouragement, we help our dancers develop not only their technique, but confidence, resilience and a lifelong love of dance.

Above all, we want Setting the Barre to be a place where children can't wait to walk through the door each week, and where families feel part of something special.

My little one started ballet last September at the age of 3. Since then she has completed a parent performance, a stage show and a carnival appearance. These are all things I never dreamed my shy girl would have the confidence to do, but she did with a massive grin on her face! I'd highly recommend
